McBride Homes Begins Demolition for New Townhome Community on The Hill, St. Louis
August 29, 2025
McBride Homes, Missouri’s largest homebuilder, will begin demolition with Bellon Wrecking at the long-vacant Hubert Wheeler State School site on The Hill in St. Louis on Tuesday, September 2, at 9:00 a.m. McBride invites news crews and local media to come watch this incredible event.
The 4-acre site at 5707 Wilson Avenue, east of Hampton Avenue and south of Interstate 44, has been vacant for decades. It previously served as the Hubert Wheeler State School, which educated students with disabilities.
Following demolition, McBride Homes plans to develop a new townhome community in St. Louis with approximately 80 attached townhomes. Each home will include two bedrooms, one to two bathrooms, and a one-car attached garage, combining modern city-style living with the historic charm of The Hill neighborhood.
“We’re excited to be coming back to The Hill with this long-awaited project,” said Jake Eilermann, CEO of McBride Homes. “We’re excited to transform this historic site into a thriving residential community that honors the neighborhood’s history while providing additional high-quality homes for local residents.”
Eilermann also pointed to the company’s success at La Collina, another McBride townhome community on The Hill, demonstrating strong demand for new homes in St. Louis’ historic neighborhoods.
“We want to maintain the historic ‘city feel’ of The Hill,” Eilermann said. “These new townhomes fit seamlessly into the streetscape while offering modern amenities, high-quality finishes, and a convenient location near restaurants, bakeries, and local shops.”
The Hill neighborhood is renowned for its Italian heritage and local attractions, including Rigazzi’s, Zia’s, Milo’s, Vitale’s Bakery, and Missouri Baking Company. The new community will allow homebuyers to enjoy walkable access to local favorites, combining historic charm with modern St. Louis living.
